(*) Notes
on Psoricoptera gibbosella and P. speciosella
The status of Psoricoptera gibbosella and
P. speciosella is somewhat confusing. Recently
this problem has been discussed by Karsholt (1995), who
considered the status of P. speciosella unsolved.
In Finland both taxa can be separated on the basis of
external characters even when they are collected together.
They also have different, though overlapping flying periods.
In male genitalia there are no clear differences (except the
size of the whole genitalia). The larvae, however,
differ distinctly and their hostplants are also
different. These taxa can be separated according to
the following notes:
P. gibbosella has more markings on
the forewing and is smaller. Flying period (in
Finland) is VII/2-VIII. The size of male genitalia is
clearly smaller. The hostplant is oak (Quercus
robur). The larva feeds on the leaves, when they
are newly developed and fresh in early June. The larva
is greenish grey with dark grey middorsal line.
Addorsal line absent.
P. speciosella has less markings on
the forewing and is bigger. Flying period (in Finland)
is VIII-IX. Male genitalia are larger.
The hostplant is Salix caprea. The larva
feeds on the leaves in late June and early July, when the
leaves of Salix are not fresh anymore.
The larva is pale brownish grey with
reddish brown middorsal line. Addorsal line reddish.
Though P.speciosella is a newcomer
in Finland (first specimens observed in the early 1960`s),
both species occur nowadays together without any
intermediate forms in some localities in south-western
Finland. Therefore P. speciosella should be regarded
as a valid species.
